In the last issue of TP I described the
first approved D of the 9th Infantry and
pointed
out that it had never been
cataloged. Here,
then.
is another un.
cataloged insignia
the first type of
DI worn by the 27th Infantry; a cloth
patch as shown below. The patch con-
sists of a black felt shield with a narrow
orange felt border and an orange felt
wolfhound sewn
on
embroidered
white fangs and red and black eyes.
I wrote TIOH for information on this
design and seven weeks later got a
reply from them to the effect that they
had no record of this insignia ever being
approved. The present design was ap-
proved on 1 May 1931. I have almost
no information at all about this insignia.
It was worn by my father in 1922 - 1923
and when I asked him for details he
could not remember as to where it was
worn on the uniform; he did remember
that it was worn as a DI along with the
old Hawaiian Division shoulder patch.
Perhaps it was worn in the same
manner as the old 2nd INF. patch type
DI (catalog no. 2b)
"on the right
cuff of the service coat ½ inch above
the end of sleeve'
. From
some years
back I remember another collector re
marking on
this
insignia;
I can't re.
member who it was, but if any collector
can add any information it would be
appreciated.
